Her stories are scattered throughout the book, the years not so clear, the chapters separated by themes, like boxes in which she places different parts of her being. She moves with her son to the countryside to heal, escape from the busy city, and live guided by her own decisions. Feldman works hard to figure out where she fits in the world. “I was controlled and overpowered as a child, and here was my opportunity to relive the experience with a different ending.” Deborah Feldman’s follow-up to her memoir, Unorthodox, details her life after leaving behind her Satmar roots. Her most recent book, Sugar in the Blood: A Family’s Story of Slavery and Empire, was published by Portobello Books in 2012, to much acclaim. Described by Kirkus Reviews as "unfailingly interesting", and by the Washington Post as "a comprehensive and truly empathetic biography", it won the Enid McLeod Literary Prize in 2004 and has been translated into several languages. In 2003 Stuart's second book, The Rose of Martinique: A Biography of Napoleon's Josephine, was published. It was adapted into a two-part documentary for the Discovery Channel in 1998, and since then has inspired a stage show, a dance piece and a number of burlesque performances. Stuart's first book was Showgirls (London: Jonathan Cape, 1996), a collective biography of showgirls through history to the present day, from Colette, to Marlene Dietrich, to Josephine Baker, to Madonna. She began working as a journalist, then branched into publishing and television documentary production. She studied English at the University of East Anglia and French at the Sorbonne. She moved to England with her family when she was 14, in 1976. Born in Jamaica, of Barbadian parents, Andrea Stuart spent many of her early years there, where her father was Dean of the medical school at the University College of the West Indies. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with-and perished from-for more than five thousand years. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist's precision, a historian's perspective, and a biographer's passion. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is "an extraordinary achievement" ( The New Yorker)-a magnificent, profoundly humane "biography" of cancer-from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Death laura thalassaI’ve just made it to Tim’s stall when the animals freak out. He’s a cantankerous old man, but he’s the only seller I know who regularly stocks produce that’s out of season. As soon as I spot Tim’s stall, I start winding my way towards it. Stashing my list in my back pocket, I glance up at the open-air farmers’ market, scanning the tables for the one I’m looking for. There’s a dull drone of noise around me as people shop at our outdoor market. The first time I meet Death, I am … not ready.Ī trickle of sweat drips down between my shoulder blades as I look over the list of items I need to pick up for my niece’s birthday barbeque later today. When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come!†I looked, and behold, an ashen horse and the one who sat on it had the name Death, and Hades was following with him.īut has a heart of iron, and his spirit within him is pitiless as bronze: whomever of men he has once seized he holds fast: and he is hateful even to the deathless gods. For five years the legal battles raged finally, the book was published in England, then reprinted in America. The book, already printed, was warehoused but not distributed. Doubleday, along with others, objected strenuously to the book’s plot and the amorality of its characters. While in the publication stage, Frank Doubleday’s wife read the manuscript and insisted that the book not be published by Doubleday, ignoring a signed contract between Dreiser and Doubleday. Theodore Dreiser wrote the novel at the turn of the 20th century and signed a contract with Doubleday Books for a 1901 publication. The story, once well-known, bears a re-look. It has been over one hundred years since Theodore Dreiser’s first novel, “Sister Carrie,” finally was published over the forces of censorship. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Bliss by peter careyHarry Joy, the central character in Bliss, is a partner in an advertising agency in a subtropical Australian town. In Bliss, his second book, the Australian novelist Peter Carey describes both places, and Hell is again the more memorable. Heaven is paradoxically the place of negatives-no disease, no pain, no naughtiness-while Hell tends to be the vivid, highly-colored place, well-illuminated by the eternal fires, populated with interesting people, that captures the imagination. It may well be heavenly to eat a chocolate sundae, but contemplating an eternity of slurping confectionery is another thing. It is ourselves a night in August when the air conditioning breaks down cocktail parties the Bronx war-the long list is both profound and banal. MOST OF US, if we think about it, have more precise ideas about what Hell is like than the other place. We watch the brothers, Thor and Loki, hurled on adventure after adventure-most of which are solved (or caused) by Loki’s trickery. At the throne of Asgard, we discover how Odin lost his eye, how he gained his wealth of mystical knowledge, what the two ravens on his shoulders whisper. From the origin of existence-gods emerging from armpits and licked from blocks of ice-the nine worlds come to life. The premise feels straightforward: Gaiman takes his favorite Norse myths and retells them. Once again, Gaiman’s masterful storytelling transcends our most vivid dreams, exploring ancient territory from a fantastically fresh perspective. So many innovative authors seem to run out of ideas, laying things on the page just to appease the cries of fans and publicists alike.įor those of you expecting this from Gaiman’s new book, Norse Mythology (out on February 7, 2017)-don’t. There is little leeway in our fanfare, as we wait to be wooed with the same splendor we experienced a decade ago-when we first cracked open Sandman or American Gods.īut a part of us also anticipates disappointment. When an author becomes as renowned as Neil Gaiman, our expectations are high. Jo’s stories are heady mixes of action, adventure, history, and passionate romance. Yet none of that matters when it comes to the heart. Neither of them are who they claim to be, each leading double lives that could get them killed.
