For five years the legal battles raged finally, the book was published in England, then reprinted in America. The book, already printed, was warehoused but not distributed. Doubleday, along with others, objected strenuously to the book’s plot and the amorality of its characters. While in the publication stage, Frank Doubleday’s wife read the manuscript and insisted that the book not be published by Doubleday, ignoring a signed contract between Dreiser and Doubleday. Theodore Dreiser wrote the novel at the turn of the 20th century and signed a contract with Doubleday Books for a 1901 publication. ![]() ![]() The story, once well-known, bears a re-look. It has been over one hundred years since Theodore Dreiser’s first novel, “Sister Carrie,” finally was published over the forces of censorship. ![]()
