During the Blitz, the Tower of London was hit by as many as 22 bombs, killing all but one of the remaining ravens and prompting Winston Churchill to hurriedly order more in order to restore the flock to size and deny the Germans a propaganda coup.Ĭhristopher has been Ravenmaster since 2011, and has now written a book about his life with the Tower's most famous (living) inhabitants. Since then there have always been at least six captive birds kept at the Tower to ensure the prophecy stays unfulfilled though there have been scares. "So the astronomer says to the King: no, if the ravens leave the Tower great harm will befall the kingdom," explains Christopher, "and you can imagine Charles thinking to himself: hmm, my father had his head cut off, there's just been this huge plague in London, followed by a great fire that wiped out most of the city I don't want to tempt fate, perhaps I'll keep the ravens here after all." ![]()
